# Segments

> Define target audiences that power discovery, outreach, and analysis

A **Segment** is a defined audience, the kind of company or contact you want to focus on. Segments are the reusable
targeting layer behind the rest of Growth: [Expand](/expand/overview) searches against them, [Sequences](/sequences/overview)
and broadcasts send to them, and Emanate uses them to understand who your ideal customer is.

Open **Segments** in the sidebar.

## Building a segment

Describe the audience and Emanate builds it. You can define a segment by:

* **Industry:** by category or NAICS code
* **Size:** revenue range and employee count
* **Location:** region or geography
* **Custom traits:** any custom field on your leads or accounts
* **Priority and product fit:** how important the segment is and what you sell into it

As you build, the AI **streams its reasoning**. You watch it discover the audience pattern, and you can refine it
through plain-language chat instead of fiddling with filter rules. Each segment shows an estimated prospect count and
example companies so you can sanity-check it before you use it.

## Putting segments to work
